I went to Scotland for my bucket list golf experience. Played here in early May. I wanted to play a shorter course before playing one of the bigger links courses. I am so glad I played here. It is a beautiful course right on the Firth of Forth. The best thing about Kilspindie is that it is a friendly small course where you will be welcomed by the local members. I had a great time being paired up with a 30 year veteran member. He told me lots of great local stories as we went around. There is only one Par 5, but you will have to be accurate on the Par 4s. The wind here tends to be not as bad as at the other courses.

Yet another short course which is links fun (Like Dunaverty and Shiskine). This course, when there is a two club wind, offers more than the other two mentioned. The fairways and greens have more contour. There are sea views everywhere, great looks at Edinburgh in the distance with Arthur's seat prominent, a stone wall in play on a couple of holes and just a lot of fun.
I must give the caveat; this is a short course and if you are in golf for challenge and 7000 plus yards, then I doubt that this is for you. Considering that the East Lothians area has Muirfield, Renaissance and others, this doesn't need to be a part of your itinerary and probably shouldn't be. I would give it 3 and 1/2 stars. Above average, but considering the golf in the area, not at the top of a list.
If you enjoy links golf and are looking for a good place to warm-up before taking in the masterpieces in the area (North Berwick and Muirfield, etc.), then this is for you. You will be done in 3 hours, be able to putt on contoured greens, have the lies that come from wavy fairways and be able to experiment with a variety of approaches. The locals are down to earth and great to take in a dram or two with in the clubhouse.
As for the course itself, there is only one par 5, but it plays into the prevailing wind. The best hole is the 8th. A par 3 which cuts across the beach to a well contoured green. There are several other holes which play close to the sea and a pull or push will end up in it. Hope for a two club wind-it will bring out the variety in the links direction-wise and shot wise. Otherwise, the drive and pitch holes could become too similar. The thirteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth holes use an old boundary wall to great effect as far as strategy goes and were the other three I truly enjoyed.
Once again, this is a local Gem and I found it to be quite enjoyable. If you land in Scotland and are looking to stay awake and enjoy a course while jet lagged, this is a great place to start a trip. It is also good for starting or finishing a 36 hole day at two different course-perhaps start here and an afternoon round at North Berwick, etc. This is a proper links golf warm-up.
