Teed off at 2PM as threesome apparently right after conclusion of large tournament was wrapping up. No one in front of us for most of round. Played each nine in under 90 minutes without rushing. Course is short with nearly every hole a dogleg. Lots of roll and greens were good, not great, and fairly slow. Lots of recent rain had course in excellent shape, but still alot of roll. Good variation of hole design and fair amount of water on back.

While Austin has some great muni options around the city, Lions is definitely my favorite. There is nothing special about this course, aside from a few interesting holes (#10 tempts a big drive to clear the water for potential par-4 eagle putts). However, it just has a charm to it that brings golfers in hoards every weekend.

The history of the course, as well as the giant live oaks that peppers various holes truly makes it a special place in Austin, And with the city revisiting how to "re-utilize" this land, I hope it stays a golf course for another 100 years!

Typical muny course Saturday play .Front 9 parkland layout followed by more woodsy and elevation changes a nd water hazards. Greens were smooth and, in good shape but all seemed to run back to front so super slow uphill putts were the norm. Fairways were hard and fast with lots of gravel and rocky areas just off the edges.

I could swear I actually saw a ton of maintainance being performed at Muny today for the first time in a LONG while.

Greens have a full stand of rye grass on them and should have been mown a bit close but greens held and putted rather well. Fairways and boxes are what you might expect in the Winter just about anywhere in these parts.

Pace was decent to outstanding. 3:42

I truly hope the maintainance I saw today was a sign that the course is headed for a permanent future in Austin. This venerable old track needs a facelift and a permanent home.

Save Muny! Forever Green!

Let's start with a confession: I don't love this course. I wish I did, but I don't.

I hadn't played Lions since college (about 15 years). Back then I played it regularly. Not much has changed. I always think about it, but it's reputation for slow play is hard to overcome. The course conditions and even the layout don't justify a 5 hr round.

I also must admit that I left after a full serving of humble pie. It may be short, but it's tight. The greens are tiny. When it's dry, everything runs out another 5 yards. Trouble is waiting for you. Don't try to overpower this place.

You can't fight the history of the course though. Whatever the shortcomings, the course is charming and it feels special to play here. There is a sense of community you don't find at most courses... lots of walkers, lots of folks in jeans, great players, beginners, old folks, young folks. It's unique, and it's GREAT! Few golf courses are as welcoming.

Everyone should experience this place, and everyone should go now! The course as it currently is might not be much to write home about, but if it could be saved and renovated it could be! My first move would be to clean up a lot of the brushy areas and trees. Opening up a little more space would make the course more playable. As it stands, if you miss by just a little bit you likely won't have an opportunity for a recovery shot. That's a shame. I think there's a classic parkland course lying dormant, and bringing it back to life would be a benefit for all golfers in Austin. Save Muny!

Fair comments. The layout isn't for everyone and it is in need of a facelift. It took me about 10 times playing it to become obsessed with it. As you say it isn't a cakewalk. Lots of local knowledge needed and great course management. being able to shape it both ways helps too. Glad you stopped by.

I played the course a few times in October and November shortly after overseeding and the greens were seriously shaggy. I spent a few weeks away before coming back today and was pleased to see they are rolling nicely again. The cooler months are typically the best time to play Muny, especially when the fairways are dry and you can get some runout. Today was the kind of day when the course really plays like it should.

Lions was once one of my favorite courses. But it has not improved in any aspect in 30 years and in some has gone downhill. The greens still have the original grainy, uneven natural Bermuda, while most courses have gone to more modern strains of grass. Rocky, uneven rough reaches into fairways. Weeds go unchecked. Water hazards are ugly. And the fact is, compared to well-designed modern courses it has a quirky layout. The owners keep threatening to convert it to condominiums, so it's been on life-support for years and no one wants to spend the money to bring it into the 21st century. It's like an aging movie star who still wants to be paid top dollar. But there are other, better golf options in Austin now.

By top dollar I meant they are charging about as much to play Lions as Roy Kizer, a much better and better maintained course. Why not maintain Lions as they do Kizer.? The reason is they don't want to spend the money to do so. Well, if they don't they should charge significantly less.

Commented on 08/13/2018

I agree the greens are grainy and could use a resurfacing and also be enlarged. Only line i take issue with is that it's looking to be paid "top dollar." I paid $21 last week to play it. I hope the owners (The University of friggin' Texas) realize they have a priceless piece of parkland and let their distinguished alum Ben Crenshaw restore it to glory.
